Sniper Hunt

Otro escenario de la campaña de Normandy Nightmare.

En esta ocasión las tropas estadounidenses finalmente han entrado en la ciudad de St. Lo. La resistencia alemana es fuerte, llegando a luchar incluso habitación por habitación en algunos edificios.

Al pelotón norteamericano le han encomendado la misión de localizar y eliminar a un francotirador enemigo.

A este pelotón americano se le ha adjuntado un médico, un bazooka team y un tanque M5 Stuard, como apoyo a esta difícil misión

El francotirador alemán y sus tropas de apoyo, una escuadra de infantería y un Pak 36, deben eliminar el mayor número posible de soldados estadounidenses, sobrevivir.

Esta partida está contemplada para 12 turnos, en los que la misión del norteamericano es localizar y eliminar al francotirador. Mientras que los alemanes tienen como misión que el francotirador elimine a 10 norteamericanos y sobrevivir a la partida.

El escenario es idéntico a la explicada en St. Lo 18 de julio de 1944.

Another scenario of the Normandy Nightmare campaign.

This time the US troops have finally entered the city of St. Lo. The German resistance is strong, even fighting room by room in some buildings.

The American platoon has been entrusted with the mission of locating and eliminating an enemy sniper.

To this American platoon has been attached a doctor, a bazooka team and an M5 Stuard tank, in support of this difficult mission

The German sniper and his support troops, an infantry squad and a Pak 36, must eliminate as many American soldiers as possible, survive.

This game is contemplated for 12 turns, in which the North American mission is to locate and eliminate the sniper. While the Germans have the mission that the sniper eliminate 10 Americans and survive the game.

The scenario is identical to that explained in St. Lo July 18, 1944.

Aunque nosotros cambiamos un par de edificios, en especial donde estaba el francotirador, más que nada para que por la altura permitiera tener posibilidades de ganar. O eso creíamos todos.

Although we changed a couple of buildings, especially where the sniper was, more than anything so that by the height allowed to have chances to win. Or so we all believed.

Aunque los jugadores podíamos ver al francotirador, el que pudiésemos dispararle sin que anteriormente lo hayamos visto (regla de avistamiento), es no sólo muy dificil, sino penalizado.

Y con un pacto entre caballeros: si no se ha hecho un avistamiento positivo, no se puede disparar ni con penalización.

Aunque al final se localizó positivamente e intentar eliminar fue un calvario.

Although the players could see the sniper, the one that we could shoot without having previously seen (sighting rule), is not only very difficult, but penalized.

And with a pact between gentlemen: if a positive sighting has not been done, it can not be shot or penalized.

Although in the end it was located positively and trying to eliminate it was a calvary.

 Las tropas alemanas de apoyo, un pelotón y un Pak 36, se repartieron acertadamente por los edificios en ruina de la ciudad.

The German support troops, a platoon and a Pak 36, were rightly divided by the ruined buildings of the city.

 Por temas de disponibilidad, al final para el  Pak 36 utilizó un Hewitzer de 75mm británico.

Due to availability issues, in the end for Pak 36 he used a 75mm British Hewitzer.

La sorpresa que tuvimos los norteamericanos, es que había un segundo equipo de francotiradores, menos expertos.

The surprise that we had the Americans, is that there was a second team of snipers, less experts.

Nada más empezar la partida, los norteamericanos iniciamos el avance, todo lo rápido que pudimos.

As soon as the game started, the Americans began the advance, as fast as we could.

Pero el buen posicionamiento alemán, nos frenó en seco, en especial el primer equipo de francotiradores.

But the good German positioning stopped us, especially the first sniper team.

Esto se tradujo en saltos de avances entre coberturas.

This translated into leaps of advances between coverages.

Incluso el M5 Stuart fue una buena cobertura, incluso para las unidades algo alejadas de este.

Even the M5 Stuart was good coverage, even for units somewhat removed from it.

Hasta que fue inmovilizado por el Pak 36.

Until it was immobilized by Pak 36.

La presión que ejerció en esta fase de la partida por parte de nuestro pelotón USA, fue especialmente relevante para que el primer francotirador tuviese que salir de su posición.

The pressure that exerted in this phase of the game on the part of our USA squad, was especially relevant so that the first sniper had to leave his position.

Y tomar el edificio donde estaba escondido.

And take the building where it was hidden.

Si el francotirador iba mermando poco a poco nuestras fuerzas, su escuadra de apoyo hacía verdaderos estragos entre nuestras filas.

If the sniper was weakening our forces little by little, his support squad made real havoc among our ranks.

Al final eliminamos al segundo francotirador mientras huía, aunque este no era el objetivo de la misión.

In the end we eliminated the second sniper while fleeing, although this was not the objective of the mission.

Las tropas alemanas colocadas en las buhardillas de algunos edificios, eran realmente un serio peligro.

The German troops placed in the attics of some buildings were really a serious danger.

Más o menos a mitad de la partida, nuestros USA no habían conseguido llegar ni a la mitad del tablero.

More or less halfway through the game, our USA had not made it to the middle of the board.

Y el médico no daba abasto para curar a las tropas heridas.

And the doctor could not cope to heal the wounded troops.

El primer francotirador dejó a su compañero herido en el edificio.

Y el muy…. se dedicó a eliminar a nuestras tropas.

The first sniper left his injured partner in the building.

And the very ... he dedicated himself to eliminate our troops.

Era tal el desastre norteamericano, que hasta los alemanes se atrevían a avanzar sus tropas a posiciones más cercanas, para hacernos retroceder.

Such was the American disaster, that even the Germans dared to advance their troops to closer positions, to make us retreat.

Incluso a asaltarnos en nuestras posiciones defensivas.

Even to assault us in our defensive positions.

Aunque este avance de presión fue lo mejor que nos pudo pasar, ya que al salir de sus escondites, nos permitió poder eliminar a algunos de ellos.

Although this pressure advance was the best thing that could happen to us, since leaving their hiding places, it allowed us to eliminate some of them.

Pero el Pak 36 no dejó de disparar contra el aun operativo, pero inmovilizado Stuard, hasta que al final lo hizo saltar por los aires.

But the Pak 36 did not stop shooting against the still operative, but immobilized Stuard, until in the end it made it jump by the airs.

La presión alemana fue tan fuerte, que al final consigui que bastantes soldados retrocedieran desmoralizados.

Y las bajas empezaban a ser importantes.

El Pak no dejaba de hostigarnos.

The Pak did not stop harassing us.

Y las tropas alemanas seguían avanzando hacia nuestras posiciones.

And the German troops kept advancing towards our positions.

Ante un atisbo de posibilidad de avance, los USA realizamos un contraataque, aunque fue un tremendo desastre.

Before a glimpse of possibility of advance, the USA we made a counterattack, although it was a tremendous disaster.

Aun no habíamos llegado al turno 12, y antes las cuantiosas bajas que las tropas de apoyo del francotirador nos habían infringido, que dimos por terminada la partida.

El alemán había ganado totalmente.

No habíamos conseguido llegar ni a la mitad del tablero ni localizado al francotirador.

We had not yet reached turn 12, and before the heavy casualties that the sniper support troops had inflicted on us, we declared the game over.

The German had won totally.

We had not managed to reach the middle of the board or locate the sniper.

Evidentemente el objetivo principal alemán de que el francotirador eliminara 10 soldados USA, no se cumplió, creo recordar que quedo en 7 u 8 eliminados, pero nos diezmaron las tropas y nos hicieron retroceder. El objetivo secundario de que el francotirador sobreviviese, se cumplió con creces.

En esta ocasión, derrota USA y triunfo alemán bien merecido.

Pero al final, entre las risas y la diversión, todos habíamos ganado.

Obviously the main German goal that the sniper would eliminate 10 US soldiers, was not fulfilled, I believe that I am in 7 or 8 eliminated, but the troops decimated us and made us retreat. The secondary objective of the sniper surviving was fulfilled.

On this occasion, USA defeat and well-deserved German triumph.

But in the end, between laughter and fun, we had all won.

A Strange Game

El pasado mes de febrero, David y yo decidimos medir nuestros ejércitos a 240 ptos.

La partida empezó más o menos bien.

La orografía del terreno terminó en el lado del ejército chino, por lo que prometía bien para mi ejército.

Pero todo fue muy extraño.

Después de desplegar, los chinos decidieron desde el primer momento maniobrar y esperar a que mis íberos se les acercasen.

Casi al final de la partida, todavía no habían bajas por ningún bando, ya que estuvimos maniobrando todas nuestras unidades, para poder tener una posición adecuada.

Last February, David and I decided to measure our armies at 240 pts.

The game started more or less well.

The orography of the terrain ended on the side of the Chinese army, so it promised well for my army.

But everything was very strange.

After deploying, the Chinese decided from the first moment to maneuver and wait for my Iberians to approach them.

Almost at the end of the game, there were still no casualties by either side, since we were maneuvering all our units, in order to have an adequate position.

Una unidad de caballería china freno mi intento de que mi ligera flanquease por la izquierda y por atrás a los chinos.

A Chinese cavalry unit stopped my attempt to make my light flank on the left and back to the Chinese.

La infantería ligera china optó por recular hasta el final del bosque, por lo que mis iberos no quisieron entrar en ella ni perseguirles (es lo que tiene las tiradas muy bajas de PIP’s).

The Chinese light infantry chose to retreat to the end of the forest, so my Iberians did not want to enter it or chase them (this is what has very low PIP drafts).

Una parte de la caballería ligera china pasó de mi flanco izquierdo al derecho, que era mi parte más vulnerable.

A part of the Chinese light cavalry passed from my left flank to the right, which was my most vulnerable part.

Mi desechable dejó en jaque a su caballería pesada, que esperaban ver que resultado podía suceder.

Y el segundo grupo de infantería ligera china, entraba fácilmente por mi flanco derecho.

My disposable left in check his heavy cavalry, who hoped to see what result could happen.

And the second group of Chinese light infantry, easily entered my right flank.

Un grupo de auxilias y mis honderos maniobraron para frenar el avance de la caballería china, mientras que mi centro del ejército, se dividía en tres para poder ir frenando los ataques de la caballería que estaba llegando.

A group of Auxilia and my slingers maneuvered to stop the advance of the Chinese cavalry, while my army center, was divided into three to be able to stop the attacks of the cavalry that was arriving.

El final de la partida se decidió por la hora de cerrar y no por que alguno de los dos ejércitos hubiese ganado.

Es más, a parte de un par de psilois iberos y alguna unidad de caballería ligera china, fueron las únicas bajas de la partida.

Una partida en la que la tirada de dados con bajos valores de PIP’s y una maniobrabilidad para poder tener una posición aventajada del contrario, fue la tónica constante de esta Extraña Partida.

The end of the game was decided by the closing time and not because either of the two armies had won.

Moreover, apart from a pair of Iberian psilois and a unit of Chinese light cavalry, they were the only casualties of the game.

A game in which the roll of dice with low values of PIP's and a maneuverability to be able to have an advantageous position of the opponent, was the constant tonic of this Strange Game.

I can't do it for everybody

En esta ocasión se realizó el escenario de la campaña de NORMANDY NIGHTMARE de Battleground (EASY EIGHT ENTERPRISES, INC), “I can’t do it for everybody”, en la que una escuadra de 10 alemanes se encuentra refugiada en una casa en medio de un prado, y un pelotón ampliado de USA, de unos 35 soldados,  deciden sacarlos de allí.

On this occasion the scenario of the NORMANDY NIGHTMARE campaign of Battleground was made (EASY EIGHT ENTERPRISES, INC), "I can not do it for everybody", in which a squad of 10 Germans is sheltered in a house between of a meadow, and an extended platoon of USA, of about 35 soldiers, decide to remove them from there.

La unidad alemana despliega dentro de la casa de campo.

The German unit deploys inside the country house.

Y los americanos en el resto de posiciones iniciales.

And the Americans in the rest of the initial positions.

La unidad “pinned” despliega al norte tras el lineal largo de bocage, representando que están agazapados para no ser vistos.

The unit "pinned" deploys north after the long linear bocage, representing that they are crouched to avoid being seen.

Y empieza la partida.

And the game starts.

Los alemanes se preparan para la oleada de norteamericanos que van a asaltar la casa en la que se han refugiado.

Sólo les queda la esperanza que los USA cometan un error táctico de bulto y puedan hacer las suficientes bajas, como para que se desmoralicen y retrocedan.

The Germans are preparing for the wave of Americans who are going to assault the house in which they have taken refuge.

They only have the hope that the USA commit a tactical error of bulk and can make enough casualties, so that they become demoralized and fall back.

Lo americanos inician el asalto por dos flancos simultáneamente, ya que es la única forma de que el alemán divida su potencia de fuego.

La escuadra del oeste inician el asalto rápido, aprovechando en parte la cobertura del bosque cercano, con la intención de entrar lo antes posible en la casa y desalojar a los alemanes,

The Americans initiate the assault by two flanks simultaneously, since it is the unique form of which the German divides its power of fire.

The west squad begin the rapid assault, taking advantage of the cover of the nearby forest, with the intention of entering the house as soon as possible and evicting the Germans,

La unidad del norte, le cuesta un poco más decidirse en saltar el bocage.

The unit from the north, it costs a little more to decide to jump the bocage.

Pero la potencia de fuego de los alemanes hace mella en los “aguerridos y valientes” norteamericanos.

Tanto en el norte.

But the firepower of the Germans make a dent in the "brave and courageous" Americans.

Both in the north.

Como en el oeste.

As in the west.

Aprovechando que la unidad del oeste no ha sufrido muchas bajas, el norteamericano inicia un asalto masivo por el norte, para que los alemanes focalicen su fuego sobre esta unidad.

Taking advantage of the fact that the unit of the West has not suffered many casualties, the North American begins a massive assault by the north, so that the Germans focus their fire on this unit.

Algunos aguantan la lluvia de plomo, pero otros optan por volver a su posición original y agachar la cabeza.

La táctica americana no era mala, pero la puntería alemana hace que el asalto del norte fracase inicialmente, por lo que pueden desviar fuego defensivo a las tropas del oeste que están muy cerca de la casa.

Aprovechando que los alemanes están más atentos sobre las unidades del oeste, que casi están exclusivamente rechazando este empuje, las tropas del norte deciden asaltar la casa.

Taking advantage of the fact that the Germans are more attentive to the western units, which are almost exclusively rejecting this push, the northern troops decide to raid the house.

Ante el empuje y el fuego de ambos frentes, los alemanes deciden dividir sus fuerzas para frenar los dos avances.

Y es en ese momento en el que las tropas del oeste consiguen acercarse más a la casa y empezar a lanzar granadas contra ella.

Before the push and the fire of both fronts, the Germans decide to divide their forces to stop the two advances.

And it is at that moment that the western troops get closer to the house and start throwing grenades against it.

Y realizar el asalto final al edificio.

And make the final assault on the building.

Es tanto el empuje de las tropas del oeste, que incluso unos pocos soldados consiguen dar la vuelta al edificio, disparar al interior por las ventanas y llegar hasta la puerta trasera.

It is so much the push of the troops of the west, that even a few soldiers manage to go around the building, shoot inside through the windows and reach the back door.

La nota negativa la tiene los sobrevivientes de la escuadra del norte que más disparos han recibido, que deciden irse de la batalla.

The negative note has the survivors of the squadron of the north that have received more shots, that decide to leave the battle.

Los americanos consiguen entrar en la casa y hacerse con los pocos alemanes que aún se mantienen en pie.

The Americans manage to enter the house and get hold of the few Germans who are still standing.

Hay que reconocer que una escuadra de 10 alemanes, contra un pelotón con unidad de mando, más o menos unos 35 soldados, el jugador norteamericano debe hacerlo muy mal para no ganar la partida.

We must recognize that a squad of 10 Germans, against a platoon with command unit, about 35 soldiers, the American player must do very badly to not win the game.

Los ejércitos alemán y norteamericano de enfrentaron, con la excusa de seguir afianzando las reglas del juego.

The German and USA Armies clashed, with the excuse of continuing to enforce the rules of the game.

El terreno se realizó de forma rápida y sin contraposición por parte de ninguno de los contendientes.

Una vez el terreno ya estaba dispuesto, cada bando escogió un lado ancho del tablero.

Y acto seguido se determinaron los objetivos; el alemán determinó que el objetivo del americano era la toma de la colina cercana a su despliegue, y el americano determino la toma del edificio más alto del pequeño pueblo.

The terrain was made quickly and without opposition by any of the contenders.

Once the terrain was ready, each side chose a wide side of the board.

And then the objectives were determined; the German determined that the objective of the American was the taking of the hill near its deployment, and the American determined the taking of the tallest building of the small town.

Los alemanes desplegaron sobre la planicie elevada cercana al pueblo.

The Germans deployed on the high plain near the village.

Y los norteamericanos desplegaron su infantería tras el pueblo.

And the Americans deployed their infantry behind the town.

Y  en su flanco derecho con los tanques Sherman.

And on his right flank with the Sherman tanks.

El primero en avanzar fue el ejército alemán.

Tuvo suerte y avanzaron mucho en este primer turno, hasta llegar al pueblo. Sus primeras unidades, montadas sobre SdKfz 250 de transporte, consiguieron llegar sin problemas hasta la primera edificación.

The first to advance was the German army.

He was lucky and they advanced a lot in this first turn, until they reached the town. His first units, mounted on SdKfz 250 of transport, managed to arrive without problems until the first building.

Mientras, el SdKfz 222, armado con ametralladoras, intentaba flanquear a los americanos por el otro extremo del pueblo.

Meanwhile, the SdKfz 222, armed with machine guns, tried to flank the Americans on the other side of town.

Parte de sus tanques avanzan para tener a tiro a los Sherman y no dejarles la opción de poderlos emboscar ni flanquear.

El resto de la infantería alemana inicio el descenso del macizo montañoso a pie.

The rest of the German infantry began the descent of the mountainous massif on foot.

Mientras su mando y el resto de tanques, se posicionan sobre el macizo, para dominar el avance americano.

While its control and the rest of tanks, it is positioned on the massif, to dominate the American advance.

Los americanos no tuvieron tanta suerte con las órdenes. Mientras una unidad si llegó hasta uno de los edificios, el resto se quedó a medio camino o en medio de la calle, al descubierto.

The Americans were not so lucky with the orders. While one unit did reach one of the buildings, the rest remained halfway or in the middle of the street, exposed.

Y los tanques a duras penas pudieran moverse algo, lo suficiente como para que dos de sus tanques no quedaran enfilados por los panzer.

And the tanks could barely move, enough so that two of their tanks were not entangled by the panzer.

En el segundo turno, los alemanes no perdonaron nada.

A la infantería le faltó poco para empezar a perder unidades, pero lo suficiente como para que no pudiesen realizar ninguna maniobra de avance y quedarse en medio de la nada.

In the second turn, the Germans spared nothing.

The infantry needed little to start losing units, but enough so that they could not make any advance maneuver and stay in the middle of nowhere.

Tras haber perdido dos Sherman en el primer turno, sin haberse movido de la zona de despliegue, la suerte no favoreció a los alemanes, ya que un doble 6 hace que todas sus tropas retrocedan la mitad de su movimiento en dirección a su zona de despliegue, dejando unidades expuestas y permitiendo respirar a las tropas americanas.

After having lost two Shermans in the first turn, without having moved from the deployment area, the luck did not favor the Germans, since a double 6 causes all of its troops to retreat half of its movement in the direction of its deployment zone. , leaving exposed units and allowing the American troops to breathe.

Y la infantería americana no pierde la oportunidad e infringe el mismo dolor que le acababan de hacer en el turno anterior, a la infantería alemana.

And the American infantry does not lose the opportunity and inflicts the same pain that they had just done on the previous turn, to the German infantry.

Y la tropa consigue avanzar algo, aunque no lo deseado.

The German infantry can not recover from the beating they just received from the Americans, but the tanks manage to embarrass the Shermans.

Los cuales se han quedado en mitad de un avance, y “a pecho descubierto”.

Which have been in the middle of an advance, and "a pecho descubierto" (bare-chested, without any protection).

Una vez finalizado el tiempo que teníamos para jugar y unos cuantos turnos, se puede determinar que la partida ha tenido dos partes importantes.

La primera parte ha sido cuando los alemanes, siendo los primeros en mover, han conseguido llegar hasta el pueblo y afianzarse en él, por lo que los americanos no tenían opción de defenderlo y menos aún defender en condiciones el objetivo alemán.

Y la segunda parte, tras la retirada momentánea de las tropas alemanas, los americanos han aprovechado para tomar correctamente el pueblo y dejar sin opciones a los alemanes, por lo que su objetivo no era cumplido.

Al final ha sido un empate técnico, a falta de 3 turnos más.

El objetivo americano estaba muy bien defendido por los Panzer alemanes, casi sin opciones por parte de los Sherman de poder acercarse.

El objetivo alemán, que tras el primer turno muy “blitzkrieg” y a punto de conseguirlo, al final los americanos se han afianzado y han dejado si opciones a los alemanes para conseguirlo.

Once we finished the time we had to play and a few turns, it can be determined that the game has had two important parts.

The first part has been when the Germans, being the first to move, have managed to reach the town and take hold of it, so that the Americans had no choice to defend it and even less to defend the German target in conditions.

And the second part, after the momentary withdrawal of the German troops, the Americans took the opportunity to take the town correctly and leave the Germans without options, so that their objective was not fulfilled.

In the end it was a technical draw, with three more turns.

The American objective was very well defended by the German Panzer, with almost no options on the part of the Shermans to be able to approach.

The German goal, that after the first turn very "blitzkrieg" and about to get it, in the end the Americans have taken hold and have left if options to the Germans to get it.

Si en vez de 3 turnos más el alemán tuviese 5 turnos, muy posiblemente la partida acabaría siendo de él, ya que los Sherman, con un despliegue con demasiada confianza,  no eran rivales sobre el terreno de los Panzer, que han defendido muy bien el flanco derecho. Una vez eliminados los tanques USA, la caza de los soldados por parte de los tanques era muy clara y de fácil resolución.

En definitiva, una muy buena tarde de juego con risas y charla muy entretenida, entre tirada de dados.

If instead of 3 more turns the German had 5 turns, quite possibly the game would end up being him, since the Shermans, with a display with too much confidence, were not rivals on the terrain of the Panzer, who have defended very well the Right side. Once the US tanks were eliminated, the soldiers' hunting by the tanks was very clear and easy to solve.

In short, a very good game afternoon with laughter and very entertaining talk, between dice roll.
