[Napoleónico] Shako II - Defensa de la población

Shako II - Defense of the population

The French advance is inexorable during the summer of 1812.

That is why Tsar Alexander I decides to send his troops to defend a town that is close to a crossroads. This town is important to the French for two reasons.

On the one hand, the crossing dominates, necessary for the advance of their troops towards Moscow, and the other factor to take into account is that the French need to have a population to act as a base of operations, since a previous post is too far away to be able to decide to move troops.

The battle begins with the Russian deployment around the town, and the French deploy in a somewhat hasty manner, since they were in a column of march towards the town that, according to their information, there were no Russian troops in the surroundings.

The main Brigade of the Russian troops are deployed in front of the entrance of the population supported by a medium battery (Foot Battery), a small brigade to the left, in anticipation of an attempt to flank them, supported by a Heavy Battery, while the cavalry brigade is in a somewhat more backward position, to be able to maneuver where it is necessary to break the French troops.

The French advance party deploys a brigade in the direction of the crossing, and a regiment of the cavalry brigade with a light battery (Horse Battery) to its right.

Taking advantage of the hill near the road, they deploy their heavy battery. The second regiment of the cavalry brigade deploys to the right of the hill and another infantry brigade has flanked to an advantageous position, were it not for the Russians planning this deployment.

It is clear that the French advance party have seen the Russian defenses ahead of time.

The French cavalry wastes no time and manages to advance until they place their light artillery on the road, in order to have an easy shot. And they don't waste time.

And the heavy battery on the hill, also does not waste time.

All the French artillery focus their shots on the infantry that avoids their flanking.

With the Russian units weakened, the French advance did not wait, so the Russians went to meet them ("what is that General doing? His orders were to hold the French attack and not move from his position")

The General of the defense of the population does not give credit to what his right flank does.

The main French brigade is also advancing towards the crossing.

The French artillery does not stop firing at the Russian troops at the crossing, as they have been ordered to advance to the crossing and protect it.

And they do the same with the units on our right flank.

The Russian heavy battery responds to the French provocations.

Stopping the advance of several French infantry regiments.

With the French infantry reaching the crossing, the Russian Dragoons regiment charged in column on the French units, catching them off guard.

But the French battalion that receives the onslaught of the Russian cavalry, managed to form a square, albeit hastily.

The second Russian cavalry regiment, the Hussars, go behind to support the Dragons.

When putting itself in square, although it has been in a hasty way, and with the support of the nearby battalions, it has been enough to reject the load and leave the regiment of Dragoons depleted.

The Hussars, seeing that the infantry does not let them approach, decide to take the same path as the Dragons.

A good game, although not finished, as it almost always happens to us, which has taught us how to charge with the cavalry, how to form a square and how to support the defense of the square with the nearby infantry, and how to reposition the infantry so that the artillery only reaches to a single regiment.

Good company with people who came to say hello and see how the game of Shakó II develops and a lot of laughs, reasons why we usually do not finish the games.

A good afternoon with an excuse for a good game is enough to bring together one of 5 fellow battles to see, laugh and, above all, talk and comment on current, near and future projects.

[Napoleónico] Retomando el reglamento Shako II

Juego / Game: Shako II

Temática / Thematic: Napoleónico

Escala / Scale: 15mm

Fecha / Date: 30/03/2019

Lugar / Location: Club +1 al Dau

Jugadores / Gamers:

This time we meet to continue taking up Shako II and remembering rules, with a Random scenario, in which both sides arrive from outside the board and we must position ourselves.

The French decide to move their artillery and position it at the top of the hill, on their left flank, so that their shots do not affect the advance of their troops.

Meanwhile, its center-flank-right advances to be able to take the population of two sectors, to become strong against the Russian advance.

Its left flank, in addition to positional artillery, uses units to protect the flank of the batteries.

The Russians initiate a rapid march, before the artillery is positioned, to be able to put up a resistance with the infantry to that elevated position of the artillery.

While one of the Russian batteries is positioned in the middle of the road, to protect the advancing advance of its infantry, and to be able to carry out an effective counter-battery.

The Russians deployed faster than they expected, to face the Gallic infantry as soon as possible, to avoid the effective French artillery.

The Russians choose to deploy their artillery in the middle of the prairie, in order to be more effective against the French infantry deployed in the center of the battlefield.

On this occasion we were more focused on the possibilities of the maneuvers that the troops can carry out in the face of pressure from a somewhat more aggressive enemy, than on the effective firing of the troops.

A new very effective learning session, in addition to the usual laughs, and a very good afternoon in the company of several colleagues, both those of us who played and those who came to see what the rules are.

[Napoleónico] El cruce

The crossing

In September 2019, I had the opportunity to play Shako to take up rules.

On this occasion, the Russian and French units are facing each other.
The Russians have the order to defend a crossing and the French to take the population near the crossing, in order to secure the bridge of the crossing and thus their troops can cross the river and get closer to Moscow.

The Russians deploy from the middle of the field, being defenders, and the French appear at the bottom of their deployment zone.

The Russians decide to be in reserve, for lack of knowing what the French general will do.

Although the cavalry deploys from the rear, with orders to advance. And they do it on the road, since this makes them go a little faster.

For their part, the French on the first turn managed to get their cavalry and almost all the infantry of the first mixed regiment to be on the other side of the bridge.

And they are wrong to make the artillery pass through the ford of the river, something that slows them down and the rest of the regiment to which they are attached, and in the end they were going to give us the start to the Russians, since they could not use the artillery .

Meanwhile, the Russian infantry on the right flank receives the advance order and they are positioned to the right of the road, in an area of planted fields.

The infantry on the left flank reposition itself to defend the population, both from within it and from the outskirts.

After a few turns of advance of the French cavalry (sorry, in the heat of the game, I did not take photos of this part), waiting for his artillery to be correctly repositioned, in a fairly successful charge by the Gauls, that they leave one unit of Russian cavalry almost decimated, they retreat for their rest, for having the exhausted horses and rebuilding the ranks after a good battle and having lost a good number of troops.

But they are positioned poorly, since they give the lateral flank to one of the Russian batteries, which so far had not fired anything, for being misplaced.

(Note, although the photo shows half a battery, a full battery had actually been deployed, which is what happens when I forget a battery at home).

The firing of the Russian battery was so effective that the few units that were unharmed ended up scattered in the middle of the road. One unit laughs less.

The game continued a little longer, but what we had come was to try the rules and spend a good afternoon in the game.

And this objective was more than achieved, despite not being able to finish the game.

[Napoleonico] Shakó II

Shako II

A new game to finish knowing the rules and correct the old mistakes.

On this occasion we return to face my Russian army with the French of Enric.

The terrain is very random.

We really found this scenario mounted on a game of, I suppose, flames that some players would use the day before.

The Russian cavalry soon begins an attempt to flank on the right.

But soon they encounter another French cavalry regiment that tries to counter that advance.

The French artillery is concentrated in a nearby mountain, to prevent the advance of the Russian infantry.

In view of the fact that the Russian infantry is not advancing and is on defensive orders, the French artillery has to advance in order to be able to effectively shoot the Russian troops.

The French cavalry charges against the Russian on the right flank. This charge cannot be 100% effective, since the Russians have taken advantage of the terrain orography and placed in a funnel. But the second of the French cavalry regiments offers important support in the attack.

Meanwhile, the French infantry ends up advancing to face the Russian, who is ordered to defend the position in which they are.

This advance is done on the right and left flank.

The cavalry match, just in a somewhat curious way.

The French dragon regiment manages to do enough damage to the Russian hussars, so that they must retreat to lick their wounds and rest from combat.

But it has not infringed enough damage so that the Russian unit has been eliminated.

But in turn, dragons must be delayed so that their mounts rest in anticipation of a second combat against the Russian cuirassiers that are behind the hussars.

In the end, the game ended in the 4th turn, without the infantry coming into combat.

It is clear that if one of the units is delayed in defensive mode and the opponent advances to confront them, the infantry suffers greatly from artillery.
And we must bear in mind that the Russians can deploy half batteries, so the artillery fire is more continuous than with the complete batteries of the French, so that these will arrive very punished when fighting.

On the other hand that a cavalry regiment has support from another unit because it is less than 1 inch is something to take into account, although it can be counterproductive, since when the regiment has come into contact with the enemy and must retreat to rest, if it crosses a unit of its own, the two units will be disorderly and it will be difficult for the second unit to carry out a load under conditions.

There are a series of small details in the rules that we did not apply before and that now, by reviewing the “what if…?” Technique, so we are discovering that Shako's regulations have all the answers and there is no (or we haven't found yet), no "gruyer cheese hole", or anything that might seem weird.

The rule about whether a troop must go back and go through, even minimally, to another unit of its own, the latter must throw a morale check so as not to get messy or fold with it, we consider it very successful and realistic, although players accustomed to other regulations that do not contemplate this reality, usually do not like anything. Or that if having to go back they find that they must go through an enemy unit, the retreating troop is automatically eliminated from the game, even if it only has a single wound, something that players of other regulations do not like either.

Or as it happened to us in another game that if the cavalry passes at a distance from the shooting of the musketeers and comes into charge with a unit that is less than 1 inch from the loaded unit, the assaulted person may choose to give support in combat or carry a shot of musketry to the cavalry before it comes to contact. Another rule that I find very real. It does not usually happen, but it has already happened to us twice and, if they have good spins, the cavalry can arrive with more than one wound to combat and disorganized, and have it very raw even before an infantry unit that is not formed in picture.

That said, little by little we are solving the small conflicts of badly applied rules. As the charges that a cavalry regiment can make in the same turn, or in continuous shifts, and the number of shifts that the horses should rest according to the number of loads made.
